Who Is God?
Captious Idols
Already in the letter to the christian community of Rome the early christian theologian Paul wrote: "Although they know that God exist, God himself gave them this knowlege. God might be invisible, but through his works, the creation, mankind saw and experienced his godly might and his greatness. Therefor nobody can give the excuse that they didn't know about God. Although mankind always knew God, they didn't want to acknowledge and thank him. Instead they concened themselfes with irreqularity things and after all they couldn't recognize God's will in their unreasonableness. They thought they were pretty slick, but in reality they were the biggest fools. Insteas of honoring the eternal God, they were praising captious idols, they idolatrous adored mortal humans, yes, even all kinds of animals."
(Bible, Romans 1:19-23)
You almost could't describe the development of God better. At the beginning of mankind was the knowledge, that there is a creator. The oldest religious texts of mankind shows, that with the beginning of human religiousness, was a belief in just one God. But "selfmade God's " took that place over more and more.
The God of the Bible
In the Bible not just humans think about God - God himself tells us how he is. Especially with the birth of Jesus, the son of God, it is clear that wants to be close to mankind:"Even through he was the same with God and had shareholding on God's dominion, he didn't demand on his liberties. No, he disclaimed it and was without any rights like a slave. He was born like any other human and was living as a human under us humans. He humbled himself and was obedient to God until his death, yes, until his disgraceful death on the cross." (The Bible, Philipper 2:6-8)
So God became a human through Jesus.
God is a person
The way Jesus is, God is. With this it is clear: God is really a person - not in terms of that he has a body. He is a you, a personal opponent. The humans can talk to him and know that he is listening. God knows the humans, as it says in the Bible in Psalm 193: "Lord you see through me, you know me through and through."
God is Father
Jesus taught the people to call their God "Father". Well people made different experiences wither their fathers. That's why it is important to see how God understands fatherhood. Jesus described it most impressive through the story of the lost son.
Even through the son lived his life, out of his free and own will, without the father - and he had to live with the sad consequences - the father stilll accept him, without torturing him with criticism and insures him his love. God is no bitter and angry tyrant, he is somebody who has deeply desire for his children. He lets humans make a free decision, but he had done everything to give them the opportunity to have close companionship even after this life on earth.
God sees humans realistic
God considered humans as sinner. This term has nothing to do with crime or ethical outsiderness. When Paul wrote: "Everyone is a sinner and have nothing to show for that would please God", than it means that every human has failed God's measures. The Bible describes humans as who they are. It can be liberating to know that have to tell yourself and God that humans are basically good. God doesn't force humans, which don't want to accept him, to do what he wants them to do. Paul wrote: "They were unconcerned about God and therefor God yield them finally to all the damnability of their thinking". (Bible, Romans 1:28)
God is gracious
The incarnation of God through Jesus Christ had the goal to propitate mankind with God. Since God's life on this earth, nobody can say that God is far from humans, or that he don't know or can't see human misery. Because of humans, God came into this world, because of them he sustain capital punishment and because of them he came back alive, as hundreds of coevals witnessed.
All this happend so that humans can have again a close relationship with God, because God don't want one single human to be eternally seperated from him. Jesus made it clearly that he came so humans may recieve salvation. Through him we shall overcome the gap between God and mankind.
